NuScale Power and Romanian national nuclear company Nuclearelectrica yesterday signed a teaming agreement to advance the deployment of NuScale’s small modular reactor technology in Romania. The signing came a day after plans for the cooperation were announced on the sidelines of the COP26 climate conference in Glasgow.

Construction of the third unit at the UAE’s Barakah nuclear power plant has been completed, and the unit is on track to start up in 2023, the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation has announced today on the sidelines of COP26 in Glasgow.
Reactor vessel for Kudankulam 5 takes shape
The Volgodonsk branch of AEM Technologies has started assembling the upper part of the reactor pressure vessel for unit 5 of the Kudankulam nuclear power plant under construction in India. Two Russian-designed AES-92 VVER-1000 pressurised water reactors are being built as the third phase of the plant in the southern state of Tamil Nadu.
Nuclear ship carries Rooppur components
The world’s only nuclear powered cargo ship yesterday set sail from the Russian port of St Petersburg laden with a cargo of components destined for the Rooppur nuclear power plant under construction in Bangladesh. The NS Sevmorput, which is operated by Rosatom enterprise Atomflot, is transporting the 1400 tonne cargo – described as mainly comprising “metal structures and mechanisms” – to the port of Vladivostock.
NuScale SMR planned for Romania
NuScale Power of the USA and Romanian national nuclear company Nuclearelectrica plan to construct a NuScale small modular reactor plant in Romania by 2028. The announcement came during a meeting yesterday between US Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry and Romanian President Klaus Iohannis on the sidelines of the COP26 climate conference in Glasgow.

Bulgaria enlists Fluor and NuScale
Bulgarian Energy Holding has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with US engineering firm Fluor to look at the possibility of replacing coal boilers with NuScale small nuclear reactors, among other things. The country has committed to stop using coal for electricity generation by 2037 or 2040.
UK government earmarks funds for progressing nuclear project
The UK government has announced up to GBP1.7 billion (USD2.3 billion) in funding for a large-scale nuclear power plant in its autumn budget and spending review. It said it is in “active negotiations” with EDF over the Sizewell C project in Suffolk. The announcement comes days after the government introduced legislation for funding future nuclear power stations in the UK.
Inner dome installed at first Zhangzhou Hualong One
The inner safety dome was yesterday installed on the containment building of unit 1 of the Zhangzhou nuclear power plant in China’s Fujian province, China National Nuclear Corporation has announced. Zhangzhou unit 1, the first of two Hualong One units at the site, is scheduled to enter commercial operation in 2024.
